Tarwhisker sat not far off from where Blacktundra made his kill, perched on a boulder on the cliffside like a hulking, pale bird of prey, completely unaware of the presence of his fellow warrior. The large, pale-furred tom wasn't feeling terribly happy, his shoulders slumped and posture bent as he gazed off into the night sky. Things hadn't been going too well for Tarwhisker lately, his crestfallen face and anxiously twitching tailtip could have shown any cat that. The fight with the fox had been bad enough--returning with a broken rib, bruised and bleeding limbs, and a horrendously slashed face, even such a simple thing as hunting had become a trial for Tarwhisker. Even though he was recovering steadily, the wounds and their consequences made Tarwhisker completely useless, not only as a warrior, but as a mentor too. Thanks to his injuries and resulting immobility, he had hardly seen any of his new apprentice, Nightpaw, and the striped tom couldn't fight off the sinking feeling that he'd let his apprentice down. And then there was Xyriscalyx, who was angry at him over a thoughtless comment Tarwhisker had made. Of course, Tarwhisker should have been used to his brother's moodiness by now, but he had already been feeling down when Xyriscalyx got upset at him, and the feelings simply snowballed.
Tarwhisker sheathed and unsheathed his claws repeatedly, leaving pale little scratches on the rock he sat upon. Before this recent row with Xyriscalyx, he'd never really given much thought to his social situation in JaggedClan--Xyriscalyx had always been the only companionship he'd ever needed. But now, after avoiding his brother for nearly a week, Tarwhisker was feeling awfully lonely. Of course he said hello to everyone, wished them a good day, how are you's, but he didn't really have anyone he could call his friend. This revelation depressed Tarwhisker infinitely, and as he stared down into the dark abyss before him, he considered, for a moment, simply walking off the cliff, and ending it all, here and now. No. Bad idea, Tarwhisker thought, pressing his pale gold eyes shut as he gve his head a small shake. Bad bad idea.
A moment later, Tarwhisker's ears twitched as he heard the faintest rustle of fur, a muffled thud, and then the unmistakable sound of unsheathed claws clacking on the rock. He turned his head slowly, a very small bit of it hoping it was an enemy warrior or a rogue, come to kill him. He searched briefly before his eyes snagged on the dark figure and glistening green eyes of Blacktundra, his dark pelt blending into the nighttime scenery as he admired the starry sky. Tarwhisker had never really spoken to the other warrior, but he figured he might as well start now. He grinned to himself as he rose from the boulder, stealing a dizzying glance into the depths in front of him before turning to join Blacktundra.
"Lovely, isn't it?" he mewed softly as he approached the other warrior, grinning crookedly.
