Mossfoot purred as Raindance caught the mouse, then scented the air for prey. The faintest smell coming from nearby. He glanced round and saw a pigeon, probably from the town standing, scrawny and unable to fly. Stalking silently across the snow, he paused, then pounced, startling the pigeon. In a flurry of feathers, he killed it with a swipe and scooped it into his jaws.

Heavyheart raced ahead of Thornfire, grinning. He skidded to a stop in the thin layer of snow, pricking up his large, bushy ears. He heard the faint pitter patter of tiny mouse feet, and immediately dropped into a hunting crouch. Stalking slowly towards a clump of bushes, he pounced at exactly the moment when the tiny, scrawny mouse streaked from the foliage. Heavyheart killed it with one swift bite, and buried it in the snow to fetch later.

Thornfire raced after him, seeing him bury the mouse. The warrior was about to purr, but caught the scent of a hare. Crouching, he skulked forwards until he could hear its skittering heartbeat. He pounced at the creature, knocking it down and swiping at it, then burying it swiftly nearby Heavyheart's mouse.

Hearing a noise nearby, Raindance stopped short, ears pricked, eyes wide. Padding slowly forward, she strained to see through the snow, scenting the air, though what scents there may be were dulled by the overpoweringly mouthwatering scent of mouse between her jaws. Forcing herself to forget about the mouse and keep looking, she spotted two cats. Perhaps the intruders? She glowered, stepping forward more, and suddenly, she saw a face. It was only Heavyheart and Thornfire. She felt her whole body relax then, and realized how tense she had been, wondering why she had been this way. She was in her own territory, an experienced warrior and deputy, and she had been worried about two town cats? Shaking her head in disgust at herself, she padded forward to face the two toms. "Hello," she mewed brightly, glancing back to see where Mossfoot was, "Fancy meeting you out here. Are you hunting?" perhaps Moonstar had sent the two to help her and Mossfoot with the border patrol.

Heavyheart looked up from where he had buried the scrawny mouse, and gazed deep into the deputy's eyes. "Moonstar sent us out on hunting patrol." he grimaced, worry pricking into his side. He knew Moonstar's kits were on the way, but he didn't know when. But leaving her in camp... "Raindance," he meowed carefully, "I think we should go back. We can hunt on the way, but I think Moonstar will need us more."

Thornfire's eyes were suddenly alight with worry. Just about stopping anxiety colouring his tone, he meowed, "Good idea," Without another word, the warrior had turned in a swish of his long tail and was heading back to camp.

Knowing that Raindance would follow, Heavyheart turned, and trotted after Thornfire, his paws making neat pawprints in the freshly laid snow. He fetched the mouse he had buried, and was disappointed by his lack of catch. He promised himself he would go back out once he had sen that Moonstar was alright.
[To camp.]

Raindance nodded in agreement, "Yes, of course," she mewed, marking the SnowClan scent once more along the border before darting after the two cats, mouse in her jaws. "Come, Mossfoot! Let's go!" she called behind her through a mouthfull of mouse. She wondered why Moonstar had sent out patrols at such a crical moment in her life, especially with no medicine cat. Though Raindance was sure that Moonstar probably didn't give birth to any kits in the time that they were gone, it was still dangerous to have the camp virtually empty at any time, especially one when the very leader was due for birth, and Raidance trotted quickly to the entrance of the cave.

With his mind full of kits, Ghoststorm found himself unconciously speeding towards the burial ground for the kits he'd discovered yesterday and stopped suddenly as the mounds came into sight. Why was he here anyway? The silver tabby shook himself, sneezed once more and turned himself firmly around, refusing to go any closer to the frozen corpses. This was not where he had wanted to go.
A few minutes later he had come to a halt behind a large grey rock topped with a little hat of snow. He was so close to PineClan that he could smell the bittere scent of pine needles. Beside the rock there was a hare who was blissfully unaware of the predator's presence. with any luck, it would stay that way until Ghoststorm pounced. The silver tabby got to within a few mouse-lengths away when a sneeze tickled Ghoststorm's nose. He grappled with it for a few seconds before letting it out explosively, causing the hare to whip around and flee for it's life.
Cursing himself, Ghoststorm threw himself into the pursuit, catching the unfortunate creature by a mixture of luck and speed. He was, however, about a tail-length into PineClan territory, a fact that the horrified tabby corrected instantly with a few hasty steps back. Hopefully, nobody would notice. He rubbed the hare in snow to dislodge the pine needle stink absently, wondering all the while if that counted as stealing prey. He didn't think so but wasn't sure. Why hadn't he smelled the border anyway? Something was blocking his scent-glands. He was also strangely out of breath. Normally such a short burst of speed would not bother him at all but now he felt as if he could sleep.
Dragging the limp body of the hare further into SnowClan territory, Ghoststorm flopped down in the snow, behind a small rise that hid him from PineClan view. Hving melted a little snow with his body heat and lapped up the water Ghoststorm felt his eye-lids begin to drop. It would be soooo easy to just float into a blissfully uncaring sleep...But he couldn't. Cats that slept on SnowClan territory had a fair chance of never waking again. Perhaps just a little rest...

A while later a large mound of snow quivered before rising up and shaking itself to reveal a silvery pelt, laced with black tabby markings. Twin blindingly yellow eyes peered through the gathering gloom with annoyance ripe in them. Ghoststorm had not meant to fall asleep but he had - that was the second time in as many days. With a quick lick of his ruffled chest-fur, the tom slunk off, carrying the ice-cold body of the hare between rows of pearly teeth. This action sent pangs of cold through his mouth and he realised the creature would have to thaw in the warmer air of the cave-camp before it could be eaten. Perhaps he would take it to Moonstar once that happened, then she might give him a kit to apprentice. Or not, after all, it was just a hare. As another violent sneeze wracked Ghoststorm's snow-soaked form he was very thankful for the sight of the cae mouth a few dozen tail-lengths away.

It seemed all he ever did was hunt and sleep, Ghoststorm thought to himself as he sped, or rather attempted to speed, across the snow toward the PineClan border again. The best hunting would be there because of all the cover. He might even see another hare. Probably not though, as he had already caugth one...today? yesterday? The silver tabby had lost track of the time with all his sparatic naps. The sky didn't help much either as it was nearly always dark and obscured by a huge snowstorm. Still, it was SnowClan's way of life, and he was used to it.

Raindance watched as her apprentice heasitated for a moment, and for a heartbeat, worried that Pheonixpaw had forgotten the way to the PineClan border. In an instant, though, this fear was extinguished as the young she-cat's eyes lit up as if in sudden remembrance of the way, and Raindance padded after the confident young she-cat.
"Always be scenting for prey and other cats while you walk," she advised, parting her jaw a bit to taste the air. At first, she caught nothing but crisp air, snow, and the faint but putrid scent of PineClan. She then detected somethting else. It was Ghoststorm, apparently out for a hunt. Deciding to test Pheonixpaw's skills, Raindance mewed, "Tell me what you can detect, Pheonixpaw."

The silver and black fur along the back of Ghoststorm's neck began to bristle as a rogue gust of wind brought the scent of other cats towards him but he had relaxed the next moment as he recognised the SnowClan scent. Balancing on his back legs for a moment with his mouth opened thougtfully, Ghoststorm realised it was Raindance out there, Raindance and...one of the apprentices. Pheonixpaw? Or Sparkpaw? No, it was definetly Pheonixpaw. It was nice, although a little odd that the deputy should take the mentorless apprentice out on a hunting trip as it was very much a mentor-apprentice activity. She was a very compasionate deputy. This reminded Ghoststorm of his own wish for an apprentice but he stiffled it. Raindance, Thornfire and Moonstar herself were the obvious choices for the new kits. And other warriors would probably be given Sparkpaw, and Pheonixpaw. Heavystep was more senior than himself, and Gladeshadow had quite a responsible air about him. Maybe even Mossfoot, as he had been trained by Moonstar herself. Ghoststorm hoped he would be higher on the waiting list for an apprentice than Mossfoot, but he couldn't be sure. Maybe Moonstar just didn't see him as a mentor. Maybe it was because of his father...but no, Moonstar wasn't that narrow-minded. Was she? Ghosttorm shook his head and dropped back onto all fours, scanning the area for prey. He was supposed to be hunting, not thinking.

Phoenixpaw realised Raindance was right. As she padded along, her paws sinking in a few inches every step into the freezing snow, she cocked her ears, and kept her senses alert for any possible prey. Pausing, she lifted one small, ginger paw off the ground, and sniffed the air. She wrinkled her nose as the fresh pine-scent reached her, but pushed it away, and searched for other scents. There was the tell tale smell of a hare, but it had long since left the area. Her bright, amber eyes surveyed the surroundings, scattered pine trees patches of green against the pure white snow. She suddenly caught the scent of another cat. She sniffed again. It was definitely from SnowClan, thats for sure...But who else was out hunting? "Ghoststorm," she meowed confidently.

"That's right!" she mewed, touching the apprentice on the shoulder with her tail, "Good work!" Pheonixpaw's skills were quite developed, and Raindance swished her tail, glad to have such a keen apprentice.
"Ghoststorm," she mewed, turning to where his scent was coming from, "What brings you here? Hunting?" remembering his previous sickly state, she added, "Have you gone to Silverwish about that sneeze yet?" she did not sound commanding or pushy, rather, concerned. She did not want a perfectly good warrior getting sick!
A heavy torrent of snow suddenly pushed its way into SnowClan territory, blinding the cats for a moment before clearing up again. It had started to snow harder, and Raindance flicked her ears in impatience. She did not want a snowstorm runing her first outing with her new apprentice! StarClan, keep the skies clear, she prayed silently. She dearly wanted Pheonixpaw to have a good time of this hunting trip! << - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -♫
