Amber eyes pierced the bottomless gloom. They flicked back and forth across the rocky cave, and, satisfied, fixed their piercing gaze at the entrance. Sunlight streamed in through a narrow gap in the rock face, falling in beams across the floor. Moonstar's silvery pelt gleamed as the dull light hit her. Her small dainty ears swiveled towards the entrance, as if she had heard a sound. Sighing, Moonstar hauled herself to her paws. She was restless, as she need to share dreams with StarClan soon.

Mosspaw slid across the rough terrain of the SnowClan territory, he wasn't far from the camp, only about ten cat tail lengths. His impossibly thick silver fur fell in waves across his broad shouldered body, developing muscles rippling beneath his pelt as the apprentice's sparkling, moss green eyes flashed like lightning in a storm.

Mosspaw swayed violently towards the SnowClan cave as a torrent of snow, carried on the wind, barreled into him. The tom retreated towards the beckoning warmth of the cave, but stayed outside, wind wipped his fur, it wasn't sharp and stinging, more cool, though not exactly pleasant.

Moonstar padded towards the entrance to the cavern. She was slightly surprised to see Mosspaw shivering outside. "Have you caught anything?" she asked worriedly. She had been forced to send her apprentice out every dawn and dusk on his own hunting patrols, as SnowClan was hardly growing. Moonstar was getting worried that her Clan would not make it through the bitter leaf-bare, and she still needed a faithful deputy.

Hauling herself up from a rocky ledge, Raindance scrambled onto the small flat surface at the entrance of the SnowClan camp. A light snow buffetted her fur, but not a shiver went through her body; her thick grey coat with just a tinge of green kept her warm against the icy winds of the mountain that her clan lived on. Besides that, she was used to the cold. She had lived on SnowClan territory her whole life. Padding over to her leader and Mosspaw, she set down a scrawny mouse and a gull that seemed to have lost its way from SandClan territory in one of the sudden torrents of snow that had been taking cats by surprise all day. "I've got some prey." She offered, spitting out feathers as she spoke, "It's not much, but with the snow today, there hasn't been much out." This was dissapointing, she knew. Greenleaf was never very green in the northern regions. It was more like "slushice", and this Greenleaf hadn't had much prey to offer. Glancing wearily at the clouded sky, she knew leafbare was coming soon. If this lack of prey kept up, drastic measures would have to be taken for the sake of the clan, she realized, and felt worry bleeding onto her face and lingering in her deep, forest green eyes.

Moonstar looked at Raindance for a few moments through her endless amber eyes. Then she sighed deeply, looking airily through the cave entrance. "Well done," she managed to meow, her voice strangled. She was deeply concerned SnowClan had not appointed a deputy yet. She had pondered over the matter for many hours, and though deeply about all the possible candidates. Yet there did not seem like a cat was strong enough yet. Moonstar flicked her gaze back to Raindance, and suddenly it hit her like a stampeding herd of deer. Raindance was the perfect deputy.

But she must wait. StarClan had not sent her any signs that Raindance would be the SnowClan deputy. Perhaps some other cat would be a likely deputy. But Moonstar could not hide the fact Raindance was about the only warrior with experience.

Raindance gave her leader a brief flick of the tail in gratitude for the acknowledgement. She picked up the prey in her mouth and hurried into the camp, but not without seeing the concern in Moonstar's face, and hearing it in her voice. She couldn't help but wonder what had brought on such a reaction. Perhaps it was the lack of prey--it had to be, she decided, as she set the bird and mouse down in the small pile of fresh kill. There wasn't much else to choose from. Two more mice that looked just as starved as the one she had caught, and a starved squirrel, no doubt found on the border between PineClan and SnowClan. She glanced outside at the drifting snow, and her belly growled. Hesitantly, she picked the smallest of the mice in her jaws and settled down on the cave floor to eat, tearing through the flesh of the scrawny, short-furred creature. She gulped it down in two famished bites before getting up, giving her pelt a brief but thurough runthrough with her tongue, and settling down, wrapping her tail around her body. Prey was caught, the borders had been marked, and now, there was nothing to do but lie around with a half-full belly and wait for Moonstar to give some orders. She gave a stretching yawn, and gazed outside, watching the snow fall calmly.

"Not yet, Moonstar." Mosspaw mewed, sparkling green eyes gaining a slightly shameful look. "I sorry, I haven't caught a sce-" He froze, nose tingling, vole, a stupid vole had wandered towards SnowClan, not that the apprentice was complaining. He crouched down in the slush, nearer and nearer to the oblivious vole. He pounced at the exact moment the vole caught his scent as the wind changed, Mosspaw didn't bother to throw it, causing it to land, stunned, he cut it's throat with a ragged grey claw, licking the blood drenched claw, he dumped the vole into the fresh-kill pile.

"Well done, Mosspaw." Raindance mewed, her eyes narrowing in appreciation. She could tell that someday, he'd make a fine warrior. And it really was a good job--especially seeing as the clan was so low on prey. She couldn't help but worry about that latley, but didn't exactly want to go out and hunt, especially since her day's work had resulted in catching nothing more than three scrawny scraps of prey. She knew that should give her more of a reason to hunt, but with so little prey about, she couldn't really see the point any more for the day.

Moonstar padded restlessly back into the Clan camp, deep in thought. She nodded absently when Raindance complemented Mosspaw, and bounded up into her sheltered den. She circled the nest a few times, and eventually lay down, her paws stretched out in front of her. She sighed heavily, and glanced outside. The swirling snow had nearly caused a whiteout.

Mosspaw purred as Raindance complimented him, he dipped his head, though, barely being able to see her through the snow, mewed, "I'd better get inside until this weather is over, the prey will have fled to their burrows for shelter." Dipping his sleek-furred head, the apprentice slipped silently into the SnowClan cave,
(BTW, who is Mosspaw's mentor?)

Padding farther back into the cave, Raindance sighed, glancing behind her to see the swirling snow. It had certainly thickened over the past few heartbeats, and she scowled at the nasty weather. Now she couldn't do anything but hang around the camp. At least we have a cave, she thought, looking around. If they didn't, she didn't know where they'd go at times like these. She suddenly pitied clans like SandClan and JaggedClan, who had little shelter aside from their own dens from thick snows like this one. She knew that sitting around would get her nowhere, so she padded quietly to Moonstar's den. "Moonstar? Is there anything else you need done?" she mewed heasitantly, "You know...maybe I could go out and melt some snow for water....or I could look for some more prey? Anything?" She tried not to sound too hopeful, but it really would be boring just sitting around.

Moonstar stood, sighing slightly. This was not the time for resting, her Clan needed her. Nodding, she meowed to Raindance, "Take Mosspaw to find herbs, I think Nightstream has run out of juniper berries. I know Mosspaw isn't a medicine cat, but it will be useful for him to know some plants." she added. Healing herbs were sparse up on the mountain, and they constantly had to refill. Twitching her ears as she pondered what else she could do, Moonstar meowed, "I think thats it, I'll take him out again later for training," With a flick of her tail, she padded into the center of the cave, she purred at how Raindance was so quick to think of the Clan's needs. She was almost certain this was the right cat to be deputy, but she had to wait for word from StarClan.
